The project centered on commercializing a high-value nanotechnology patent portfolio developed within Seoul National University. The key challenge was to translate advanced academic research into a commercially viable licensing agreement with a major Korean industrial company while maximizing royalty value for the university.
Dr. Shim led a year-long negotiation with Hanwha Chemical, structuring the licensing strategy, value proposition, and commercialization terms around the patented uniform nanoparticle manufacturing technology. The negotiation required alignment between academic innovation, industrial application, patent value, and long-term commercialization potential.
The negotiation resulted in a landmark technology transfer agreement with Hanwha Chemical, setting a national record for university-earned technology licensing royalties in Korea. The transaction demonstrated how university-originated research can be transformed into substantial commercial value through strategic IP licensing.
This case illustrates Dr. Shim’s ability to bridge academic research, patent strategy, industrial demand, and commercial negotiation, creating a benchmark achievement in Korea’s university technology transfer history.
